Energy transition and climate
A vague familiarity with “Energy transition and climate” is no longer enough. This belongs with Energy and climate. You follow the transition, energy markets, renewables and shared resources. People are hired to decide, not just to name the topic. This AEES certification is for professionals, managers and leaders who want to judge a pathway, decide a transition investment and read a climate risk. No diploma is required. What is required is a working command of written French, and the will to show the subject on a real file, in a company, a public body or a partner organisation.
You are not joining a long degree. You take “Energy transition and climate” seriously enough to use it, and seriously enough for someone else to read it on a file. Everything happens online, around a job you already have. You prepare if you need to, then you sit a professional assessment. The AEES Executive Certificate, if it is issued, is proof in your name, and it can be checked. It holds in a CV, a move or a cooperation. It is a short specialisation, issued by a higher-education institution. You see at once what you are buying: a targeted title, not a course catalogue.
Afterwards you can carry “Energy transition and climate” into a team, a file or a new responsibility, and explain your choices to a manager, a funder or a partner institution. Others will see that you can judge a pathway, decide a transition investment and read a climate risk, including outside your own organisation. If you succeed, AEES issues an AEES Executive Certificate in your name, with a unique serial number that can be checked in the public register. The award stays in your workspace. It shows a professional judgement you have demonstrated, useful for a CV, a new post or work in common.

To prepare for the assessment
After purchase, a preparatory course is available: 6 written modules, without an instructor, at your own pace. You are not required to follow it before opening the assessment. Each module sets out the notions, a commented case, the points to keep and a FAQ. It covers Pathway, Mix, Investment and Risk.
When you are ready, you enter the assessment: a file already open, incomplete facts, conflicting views. You move through successive decisions. This is not a full taught programme with pedagogical supervision.
Notions, objectives and concrete examples, organised progressively.
A commented professional situation to anchor the theory.
Frequent doubts, then questions to go further on your own.
- Pathway A pathway is not a press release. It is the line from your baseline to your destination, through real constraints, real spending, and real milestones. You will use recognized sources for targets and scenarios, define what is in and out of scope, and choose levers that your organization can actually deploy. The result should be a plan that reduces emissions at the speed that regulators, investors, and systems can tolerate while keeping your enterprise running. You will separate three questions: where you are, where you will go, and how you will get there. Where you are means a defensible greenhouse gas inventory, with clear scopes and boundaries. Where you will go means a target anchored in science-based pathways, with dates and interim checkpoints. How you will get there means an ordered set of technical and commercial moves, costed, sequenced, and stress-tested against uncertainty.
- AEES Executive Certificate in Energy Transition and Climate, Module 2: Mix This module teaches you to compare transition pathways with numbers. A pathway is a specific mix of technologies, fuels, and operational practices mapped to time. You will move from a baseline to options that meet the same service need, and you will quantify what changes when you choose one mix over another. Your task is not to be a technology advocate. It is to be consistent, explicit about assumptions, and focused on system outcomes. You will account for emissions across the lifecycle, cost per unit of service, reliability to a standard, and practical limits such as build rates, land, water, siting, and materials. You will present the trade-offs clearly so a decision maker can act.
- Module 3: Investment for the Energy Transition This module gives you a practical way to decide capital expenditure in energy and climate projects under volatile energy prices. You will build an investment case that holds when power, gas, carbon, and certificate prices move. The approach is pragmatic: cash flows first, risk next, governance always. You will learn to translate scenarios into contracts, contracts into bankable revenues, and uncertainties into structured options rather than guesswork. You will not be asked to predict markets. Instead, you will identify price exposures, choose hedges and commercial models that fit your asset, and test decision resilience with disciplined scenario and sensitivity analysis. The focus is on assets that are material to decarbonization and operations: generation, storage, electrified heat, efficiency retrofits, fuel switching, and enabling infrastructure. We combine standard finance tools with sector specifics like grid constraints, balancing costs, degradation, and carbon pricing.
- Module 4 Risk: Seeing the Asset Before It Loses Value Risk in the energy transition is not abstract. It shows up as lost margin, stranded equipment, tighter covenants, higher insurance deductibles, and impairment tests you can no longer pass. The useful question is simple: will this asset still create value under credible climate pathways and worsening physical hazards, or will it drain cash and management attention? In this module you will connect climate scenarios to the mechanics of cash flow, valuation, and decision gates. You will separate physical risk from transition risk, and then join them back together in a decision that holds under uncertainty. You will translate scenarios into prices, volumes, and costs. You will set up a transparent method that can be reviewed by finance, operations, risk, and your board. You will not forecast the future. You will establish whether an asset survives plausible futures without heroic assumptions.
- Operations: Hold operations while you change the system Transition projects often promise future benefits, yet your customers, regulators, and teams need the plant, fleet, or service to run today. This module shows you how to keep production and service levels stable while you deploy electrification, energy efficiency, renewable sourcing, and process changes. You will learn to frame continuity as a hard constraint, design practical work windows, and stage the transition so operations win on day one and keep winning over time. Operations are a system of interlocking constraints: safety, quality, throughput, cost, delivery, and environmental compliance. Climate action adds new constraints and new opportunities. You will integrate energy metrics with familiar operational KPIs, use Management of Change to reduce risk, and make maintenance, engineering, and finance pull in the same direction. The outcome is not a perfect blueprint. It is a repeatable way to move from intention to daily practice.
- Module 6: Account, State the Real, Including the Delay This module is about accountability. Not ambition. You will set boundaries, select decision-useful metrics, and report the picture that exists, not the one you wish you had. That includes delays, shortfalls, and tradeoffs you took to keep operations safe and customers served while changing the system. You will work from recognized standards for greenhouse gas accounting and climate disclosure. You will make the link between non-financial metrics and financial implications clear. You will prepare information others can verify, reuse, and base decisions on. The discipline is the same whether you lead a plant, a portfolio, or a firm.
